Social Education for Brain Health

Education has typically been focused on the young. But we at Purplearn asked why. Education and brain health should be for everyone!

Learning is a lifelong process. When learning is fun, you want to do it more often. Scientists agree that, when it comes to your brain, there is a lot of truth in the old saying, "Use it or lose it."

The average lifespan has more than doubled since 1850 and it is increasing at the rate of about five hours every day. We are living longer all the time. But with this longer life comes new challenges. After the age of 65, your risk of developing Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s increases exponentially. Yet there are few resources to help people at risk.

Gregory Petsko, professor at Brandeis University and a Rhodes Scholar says we are fast approaching a neurological epidemic. He says there are three things you can do right now to help yourself. Chronic high blood pressure is the biggest single risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, so you should try to worry less. Also eating more omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil or flax seed lowers your risk. But the single best thing you should do to take control of your brain health is use it wisely.

This means everyone, regardless of age or mental ability, can put themselves in a more protected position. You are in control! We designed the Purplearn program to empower those most at risk to help themselves. We know we are providing a much needed and critical service. Purplearn is here to help.
